General Processor Problem and Fix

Problem

Computer hangs after sometime.

Remedy

1.       Check whether this problem is due to any application program.

  1. Check whether the computer is stable when working with some other application.

  2. If the problem is due to an application, remove and re-install application.

  3. Keep in mind you check that all the hardware requirements are met (for using that application software).

  4. Install any service pack or software patch required for the operating system and the application. Install all necessary critical updates for the Windows Operating system.

  5. Check whether any virus has infected the computer. Use anti virus software to clean.

  6. Clean the hard disk and free up space. (Use disk cleanup utility to delete recycle bin files and temporary Internet files.) Check if the problem is solved or not.

  7. Scan the hard disk (boot partition) to check if there are any errors in the file system.

  8. If problems are found in hard disk correct the problem and check.

  9. If the problem is still not solved, then, open the cabinet. Clean the dust inside the cabinet, by using a handy vacuum cleaner. Clean the processor fan blades.

  10. Remove the memory modules and clean and fix them in their slots.

  11. Check whether the problem is solved.

  12. If the problem still persists, then check SMPS output voltages.

  13. If you suspect that there is a fault in the SMPS, then check by changing the SMPS.

  14. Visually inspect the motherboard for any damaged components like a protruding capacitor.

  15. If you find any such electrically damaged component, send the motherboard for a service.

  16. Observe, if the processor fan is functioning well or not.

  17. If the processor fan is not working / cooling properly, replace the fan.

  18. If the problem cannot be solved till this step, then remove the processor and install it another motherboard. Observe the new setup.

  19. If the problem repeats in the new setup, then replace the processor.

Problem

After installing the processor, the computer does not start. When switched on, the LED’s are lit and immediately they go off. (This problem occurs when assembling new PC)

Remedy

  1. Check if power is available and power cable is okay.

  2. Check whether the SMPS fan is working.

  3. Switch off and remove the power cable. Open the cabinet.

  4. Check if the front panel power switch is connected to the front panel header on the motherboard.

  5. Check whether the SMPS power connector to the Intel Pentium processor (Four Pin Square Power connector) is connected to the processor power connector on the motherboard.

  6. Connect the power cable and switch on.

  7. Check the SMPS output voltages.

  8. If SMPS is okay, continue the following steps from step 10.

  9. If SMPS is not okay, check by changing the SMPS.

  10. If the problem continues, it may be because of an improper processor installation.

  11. Remove the heat sink and fan.

  12. Check whether the processor is correctly installed in the socket.

  13. Observe the processor seating on the socket.

  14. Mount the heat sink over the processor and fix it on the motherboard rigidly.

  15. Connect the fan power connector to the motherboard.

  16. Now check whether the computer starts properly.
