General SMPS-Swith Mode Power Supply Problem and fix

Problem The computer boots normally, but behaves erratically after some time. Remedy The power supply may not be able to support the load inside the computer. The internal fan in the SMPS could have failed and excessive heat inside the SMPS might have caused the erratic output voltages. Check whether the SMPS fan is functioning. If the fan is okay, then switch off the power. Remove the power cable and open the cabinet.. Check the SMPS output voltages, after connecting the power cable and switching on the computer. If the SMPS outputs are not satisfactory, then check by replacing the SMPS. Now the problem is solved. Send the faulty SMPS for a service.                 Problem After adding one hard disk drive and one DVD drive to a computer, which already has a hard disk and CD writer, the computer does not start. Remedy Remove all the power connectors, except connectors to the old drives and mot

General Mother Board Problem and fix

Problem System restarts after installing a PCI card.   Remedy Switch off the computer. Remove the power cable. Remove and re-install the PCI card, in another slot. Check the computer for normal operation. If the problem persists, remove the PCI card and install and check in another computer. If the test computer works normally, then it may be because of compatibility issues. Replace this PCI card by another, after consulting which version of PCI the motherboard supports. Install the new PCI card and observe the functioning.   Problem System does not switch on.   Remedy Check whether power is available to the computer using a multimeter / tester. Check whether the power cable is okay. Check if there is any separate switch on the SMPS to turn-on. Check whether the SMPS fan is working, after switching on the computer. Check whether the front panel power switch is stuck or working. A

General Processor Problem and Fix

Problem Computer hangs after sometime. Remedy 1.        Check whether this problem is due to any application program. Check whether the computer is stable when working with some other application. If the problem is due to an application, remove and re-install application. Keep in mind you check that all the hardware requirements are met (for using that application software). Install any service pack or software patch required for the operating system and the application. Install all necessary critical updates for the Windows Operating system. Check whether any virus has infected the computer. Use anti virus software to clean. Clean the hard disk and free up space. (Use disk cleanup utility to delete recycle bin files and temporary Internet files.) Check if the problem is solved or not. Scan the hard disk (boot partition) to check if there are any errors in the file system. If problems are found in h

General Memory/RAM issue and fix

Problem Memory gets heated. (The service engineer is attending to a complaint that the computer is hanging frequently. At this time this problem is observed). Remedy Check what type of RAM is present and at what frequency it is rated to operate. Check the motherboard manual to determine what frequencies and type of RAM can be used. Check this memory module in another computer. If the memory module works fine in another computer, it may be because of compatibility problems. Replace the new memory module in the memory slot. Problem No improvement in system performance, even after upgrading to a new processor   Remedy Check whether the POST shows this processor and its actual speed. If it is not so, check the CMOS settings to set the processor speed to its rated value. Run Disk Cleanup utility to clean and free up hard disk space. Run Disk Defragmentation to improve the performance. Check if there is an

CD ROM drives and DVD ROM drives

--> Problem Unable to eject the CD. Remedy There will be an emergency eject hole in the front of the CD/DVD Drive Use a blunt pin to eject. A program may have stopped the CD/DVD from being ejected. Stop the application and give time to stop the drive from spinning. Eject the disk. Even now if the disk cannot be ejected, open the CD drive assembly and check and replace the gear-belt. Problem DVD-ROM drive is not listed in the Windows My Computer contents. Remedy Check if the DVD ROM drive is connected to the power supply. Check if the DVD ROM drive is connected to the motherboard by the data cable. Check whether the secondary IDE is disabled in CMOS settings. The data cable may not be compatible with the drive especially the 80 conductor cable used for connecting the hard disks. The Master / Slave configuration of the DVD ROM drive might conflict with another drive in th

General Hard Disk Problems

--> Problem The new operating system installer does not identify the hard disk. Remedy Switch off the computer. Remove the power cable. Open the cabinet. Check whether the hard disk power and data cables are connected properly. Change the hard disk power cable and check if it is identified in the CMOS setup. After confirming whether the hard disk is listed in the CMOS setup, boot the computer with the Disk manager bootable disk. Using disk manager, create a partition and prepare the hard disk. Now start the operating system installation. The Operating system will now identify the hard disk. Problem Unable to delete or create partitions in a hard disk. Remedy Check whether the hard disk is identified by a disk utility like FDISK. A Partition table virus may cause this kind of problem. Boot with a clean boot floppy and scan the hard disk for a virus infection. Even after this, if the partitions cannot be modified, use Disk Manager.
