1.I have a Compaq Presario PC......I used to be able to use the desktop shortcut icon method to place shortcuts on the desktop. Now when I click that option...nothing happens.

yes,recreate and replace your shortcut using sent to desktop option(right click the appropriate file-click sent to desktop option)

3.How to recover file from defective DVD?

One of my DVDs has got some scratches and unfortunately one of the vob files (vlc media files) can no longer be run using windows media player. The problem is, it runs for a while and then the media player stops abruptly. Is there any free software using which I can create a new media file consisting of the portion unaffected by scratches? May be there is some small portion in the original file where disturbance occurs, so I want to neglect just that portion and create a new file consisting of the remaining portions.
