CD ROM drives and DVD ROM drives

Problem



Unable to eject the CD.



Remedy



There will be an emergency eject hole in the front of the CD/DVD Drive


Use a blunt pin to eject.


A program may have stopped the CD/DVD from being ejected.


Stop the application and give time to stop the drive from spinning.


Eject the disk.


Even now if the disk cannot be ejected, open the CD drive assembly and check and replace the gear-belt.



Problem



DVD-ROM drive is not listed in the Windows My Computer contents.



Remedy



Check if the DVD ROM drive is connected to the power supply.


Check if the DVD ROM drive is connected to the motherboard by the data cable.


Check whether the secondary IDE is disabled in CMOS settings.


The data cable may not be compatible with the drive especially the 80 conductor cable used for connecting the hard disks.


The Master / Slave configuration of the DVD ROM drive might conflict with another drive in the same channel.


Check the cable connections and also the jumpers. The drive may be identified now.





Problem


Not able to boot from the CD-ROM drive.



Remedy



Check the boot sequence. It should be ordered to boot first by the CD-ROM disk.


Check with another bootable CD.


Clean the CD-ROM drive’s lens by using a cleaning disk.


Change the data cable for a possible cable fault.


Remove any bootable floppy disk, sequence the boot order and check with the CD-ROM drive.




Problem



Buffer under run causes a failure of writing in CD / DVDs.



Remedy



Check if there is enough space in the hard disk.


Check if the virtual memory is at least 1.5 times the amount of main memory.


Check the total amount of memory available.


This problem arises due to insufficient memory available.


If the memory cannot be freed, then add more memory and check by writing CD’s.




Problem

Unable to listen to an audio CD in a DVD-combo drive.

Remedy


Check to see whether the control panel shows any available (active) audio device.


Check, if there is any audio CD player available in the computer.


Check whether the player software is not in a mute state.


Check if the speakers are turned on and connected to the correct green coloured jack We can also check by directly connecting the speakers to the CD drive’s headphone socket in the front cover.
