General Mother Board Problem and fix


Problem



System restarts after installing a PCI card.

 

Remedy



  1. Switch off the computer. Remove the power cable.

  2. Remove and re-install the PCI card, in another slot. Check the computer for normal operation.

  3. If the problem persists, remove the PCI card and install and check in another computer.

  4. If the test computer works normally, then it may be because of compatibility issues.

  5. Replace this PCI card by another, after consulting which version of PCI the motherboard supports.

  6. Install the new PCI card and observe the functioning.

 

Problem



System does not switch on.

 

Remedy



  1. Check whether power is available to the computer using a multimeter / tester.

  2. Check whether the power cable is okay.

  3. Check if there is any separate switch on the SMPS to turn-on.

  4. Check whether the SMPS fan is working, after switching on the computer.

  5. Check whether the front panel power switch is stuck or working.

  6. After step 5, the cabinet can be opened. Remove all the power connectors to every device, except power to the processor and motherboard.

  7. Check whether the system switches on.

  8. Connect power to each device one by one and find which device is faulty.

  9. If a particular device is found to be faulty, remove it and replace it.

  10. If no device is faulty but the system does not switch on, then remove the motherboard and send it for servicing or replacement.

Problem



            There in no beep sound and display.



Remedy



  1. Check whether the system gets power, with a multi-meter / tester.

  2. Check whether the SMPS fan is working, after switching on the computer.

  3. Check whether the front panels LED’s are glowing.

  4. Check whether the monitor LED is lit and showing green or orange and blinking.

  5. If the monitor is blinking, check whether the monitor is connected to the correct VGA adapter.

  6. Switch off the computer. Open the cabinet.

  7. Install a working VGA card in the PCI slot and check.

  8. If the problem is not solved, then proceed to next step.

  9. Remove the memory modules and clean the memory slots by using a brush.

  10. Clean the memory module’s contacts by using an eraser.

  11. Insert the memory modules in their slots.

  12. Check by switching on power to the system.

  13. If there is no display / no beeps, then replace the RAM.

  14. Check if the SMPS output voltages are okay.

  15. If the SMPS output voltages are not okay, then check by using a working SMPS.

  16. Connect power connectors to the motherboard and the processor and check.

  17. If the problem persists, then send the motherboard for service / replacement.
