General Mother Board Problem and fix
Problem
System restarts after installing a PCI card.
Remedy
- Switch off the computer. Remove the power cable.
- Remove and re-install the PCI card, in another slot. Check the computer for normal operation.
- If the problem persists, remove the PCI card and install and check in another computer.
- If the test computer works normally, then it may be because of compatibility issues.
- Replace this PCI card by another, after consulting which version of PCI the motherboard supports.
- Install the new PCI card and observe the functioning.
Problem
System does not switch on.
Remedy
- Check whether power is available to the computer using a multimeter / tester.
- Check whether the power cable is okay.
- Check if there is any separate switch on the SMPS to turn-on.
- Check whether the SMPS fan is working, after switching on the computer.
- Check whether the front panel power switch is stuck or working.
- After step 5, the cabinet can be opened. Remove all the power connectors to every device, except power to the processor and motherboard.
- Check whether the system switches on.
- Connect power to each device one by one and find which device is faulty.
- If a particular device is found to be faulty, remove it and replace it.
- If no device is faulty but the system does not switch on, then remove the motherboard and send it for servicing or replacement.
Problem
There in no beep sound and display.
Remedy
- Check whether the system gets power, with a multi-meter / tester.
- Check whether the SMPS fan is working, after switching on the computer.
- Check whether the front panels LED’s are glowing.
- Check whether the monitor LED is lit and showing green or orange and blinking.
- If the monitor is blinking, check whether the monitor is connected to the correct VGA adapter.
- Switch off the computer. Open the cabinet.
- Install a working VGA card in the PCI slot and check.
- If the problem is not solved, then proceed to next step.
- Remove the memory modules and clean the memory slots by using a brush.
- Clean the memory module’s contacts by using an eraser.
- Insert the memory modules in their slots.
- Check by switching on power to the system.
- If there is no display / no beeps, then replace the RAM.
- Check if the SMPS output voltages are okay.
- If the SMPS output voltages are not okay, then check by using a working SMPS.
- Connect power connectors to the motherboard and the processor and check.
- If the problem persists, then send the motherboard for service / replacement.
