General Memory/RAM issue and fix

Problem

Memory gets heated. (The service engineer is attending to a complaint that the computer is hanging frequently. At this time this problem is observed).

Remedy

  1. Check what type of RAM is present and at what frequency it is rated to operate.

  2. Check the motherboard manual to determine what frequencies and type of RAM can be used.

  3. Check this memory module in another computer.

  4. If the memory module works fine in another computer, it may be because of compatibility problems.

  5. Replace the new memory module in the memory slot.

Problem

No improvement in system performance, even after upgrading to a new processor

Remedy

  1. Check whether the POST shows this processor and its actual speed.

  2. If it is not so, check the CMOS settings to set the processor speed to its rated value.

  3. Run Disk Cleanup utility to clean and free up hard disk space.

  4. Run Disk Defragmentation to improve the performance.

  5. Check if there is any Antivirus software that is malfunctioning.

  6. Check whether any background process like automatic live-updates are going on.

  7. If the problem does not solve here, then switch off power and remove the power cable.

  8. Check what type of memory modules is supported in the motherboard.

  9. Find out which type is the best choice of memory and what is the maximum operating frequency for that type of a memory module.

  10. Install the correct memory module operating at the best frequency supported by the motherboard and processor.

  11. Install a display card (if the user is using only the built-in graphics adapter), with built-in graphics RAM, to avoid reduction in the available memory size.

  12. Follow the operating system recommendations regarding the hardware requirements, especially the memory size, hard disk space and virtual memory settings.

Problem

After adding an old memory module, the system becomes unstable.

Remedy

1.       Switch off the computer and remove the power cable.

  1. Open the cabinet and observe whether the memory module is properly fixed.

  2. Remove both the old and newly added memory modules and visually inspect if there is any difference in their operating speeds.

  3. If there is any difference, find another memory module and install two modules in adjacent slots. (These two modules should be of the same capacity, and both should be working at the same frequency.

  4. Now connect the power and check if it is operating properly.

  5. The problem is solved. (This problem is due to incompatibility of two different modules working at different frequencies).

Problem

Unable to insert a memory module in the socket

Remedy

  1. Always exercise caution while inserting a memory module in the socket.

  2. Improper handling may damage the memory electrically as well as physically. (Physical damage will void the warranty).

  3. Check which type of memory module and memory slot are available.

  4. Match the cut on the memory module with the bridge like appearance on the slot.

  5. When every thing is checked and verified, place the module in the correct slot and use the clips on the sides to secure it with a single click sound.
